More than 600,000 people in the United States are homeless—with 222,000 of them being families. People become homeless for many reasons. Some may experience loss of a job, an illness or a death in the family.

“Bob” lost his job in 2012, soon after his house was foreclosed. The tremendous stress took its toll on Bob and his wife, and they got divorced. Bob was now raising a baby and moving from place to place. He would stay with friends and family as long as they allowed, but eventually he was left with nowhere to go.

The Homeless Trap

As a graphic designer, who had also worked in a warehouse, Bob was unable to find a new job without a home address. It is nearly impossible to break the trap of homelessness without a job. Fortunately, Bob met Sabina Riggi, a Catholic Charities staff member, during a community outreach. Sabina told Bob about our affordable housing program.

To qualify for housing Bob needed to have a job. Sabina introduced him to Bruce Relf at Breaking Barriers, a non-profit organization that helps place people find jobs.

A Job, Affordable Housing and Hope

Within three days Bob was working in a warehouse making $12.50 per hour. Bob and his 1-year-old son recently moved into Verde Villas, an affordable housing option for veterans and low-income families in Phoenix.

“He was married and had a home, and got knocked down, and now he’s trying to get back up,” Sabina said.

Verde Villas

Residents of Verde Villas have access to a resident services coordinator. They are able to take financial classes and have access to support services that will allow them to move out of poverty. Bob is now on the road to becoming self-sufficient and financially stable.
