Inside the Bullhead City Shelter

During any given night, there are more than 200 people experiencing homelessness in Mohave County, Ariz. The Legacy Foundation Christine Stamper Center for Help & Hope, operated by Catholic Charities, is the only emergency shelter for families or individuals in the Tri-State area.

The shelter opened to provide emergency housing in Bullhead City and serve as a day resource center and an outreach center that can provide temporary shelter and meals for up to three families, 40 individuals, and eight veterans.

Emergency Shelter for Families

Homeless families face unique challenges. Many shelters do not allow men to stay in the same facility as children. For single fathers, two parent families, or families with 18-year-old sons, they may be forced to separate. Many families will stay on the streets instead of being housed separately.

The Bullhead City Shelter has a dedicated family shelter that is separate from the main shelter. Families have private bedrooms, a private bathroom and communal kitchen, dining, and play area. Families also have a shared laundry area. Up to three families can receive temporary shelter in a home-like setting.

The family shelter provides a safe place where families can make a fresh start without worrying about where they will sleep or what they will eat. A housing case manager will help the families work toward permanent housing, reliable employment, and financial independence.

Temporary Housing for Individuals - Women's | Men's Emergency Shelter

The Bullhead City Shelter has dedicated shelter space for both men and women. This space provides temporary emergency shelter for up to 40 individual adults, with men’s and women’s areas separated.

Men and women staying at the center have access to hot meals, showers and hygiene supplies, laundry facilities, computer access and compassionate case managers who help them navigate community resources and create a plan for permanent housing.

Assistance Program for Homeless Veterans | Bullhead City, Arizona

Veterans experiencing homelessness may be reluctant to enter a homeless shelter. The Catholic Charities shelter in Bullhead City provides a dedicated space that can accommodate up to eight veterans. Veterans will find solace in the semi-private rooms that provide more privacy than the general shelter.

Catholic Charities Veterans Services has on-site case managers to help veterans navigate local, state, and federal resources. Veterans may be eligible for transitional housing, rental assistance, emergency assistance and other resources.

About the Bullhead City Emergency Shelter and Outreach Center

In addition to providing emergency shelter, the Legacy Foundation Christine Stamper Center for Help & Hope provides hot meals made in the commercial kitchen, shower facilities and restrooms, a wellness clinic, laundry area, inside and outside seating, an outside cooling station during hot weather, and case management.

Day Resource Center

The shelter provides a day resource center for those who do not need a place to stay but require other assistance. Individuals experiencing food or housing insecurity but are not experiencing homelessness are able to access a computer lab, laundry services, showers, clothing, hygiene supplies, and nutritious food served every day to anyone in need.

Catholic Charities’ caring and compassionate staff members will be on hand to assist clients in connecting with the many additional community resources.

Outreach Center

Our Homeless Outreach team members also conduct routine outreach in the community to provide critical supplies such as water, food, and hygiene supplies. The outreach teams are equipped with seasonal items including lifesaving hydration supplies in the summer and winter weather gear during the winter.

Father and Daughter Find Shelter

In July 2020, Craig and his 13-year-old daughter lost their home. Craig and his daughter soon found themselves sleeping in their car. After three weeks of living in the car, Craig was given the phone number to Catholic Charities for housing assistance.

While at the shelter, Craig set goals for himself and his daughter. His priority was to find employment.

Next, Craig and his daughter were approved for the Rapid Re-Housing program at Catholic Charities. They successfully moved into their new home on November 4, 2020.
