North Star Youth Program (NSYP) in Prescott created Hungry for Art: Art for a Cause, a community art contest for Yavapai County residents from the ages of 5 to 18. The artwork, based on the theme of hunger, was made into promotional items and will be sold to raise funds to benefit families in Yavapai County through the Hungry Kids Project.
Hungry for Art was a fun and creative way to bring awareness to the problem of hunger. According to the Hungry Kids Project, about 40 percent of Prescott families with students in the school system live at a poverty level and suffer from malnourishment every day.
Contestants submitted original creations with the theme Hungry for Art. This included ideas stemming from words and phrases such as a world without hunger, ending hunger, poverty, hungry, community, awareness, food, resources, relief, optimism, and agriculture. The winners, Emma Rabine (5-10 year old contestants), Lydia Strom DuBord (11-14 year old contestants), and Rebecca Shaver (15-18 year old contestants), each received a $150 Visa gift card, and their artwork is featured on items for sale at the Catholic Charities Community Services building located at 434 W. Gurley Street, Prescott, AZ 86301. They will also be available on the NSYP website by the end of July. NYSP has already raised about $325 for the Hungry Kids Project.
More than 50,000 Northern Arizona youths have participated in North Star’s award-winning programs since it was first established in 1997. Today, NSYP provides positive opportunities for youth development through educational, leadership, service learning, and sports/recreational programs.
